Texas811, the nonprofit organization that manages the state’s “call before you dig” system, has launched a new real-time excavation monitoring solution to help prevent underground utility strikes. The Texas811 Guardian program uses Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) technology , including solutions from AP Sensing, to turn existing fiber-optic networks into continuous monitoring systems that detect excavation activity in real time.
By integrating DFOS alerts directly into the Texas811 ticket system, Guardian helps utilities identify and respond to potentially unauthorized excavation activity before damage occurs. This improves safety, reduces service disruptions, and protects critical infrastructure.
How Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) Works
Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) uses standard fiber-optic cables as sensors across long distances. Laser pulses travel through the fiber, and small changes in the returning light signal indicate vibrations or disturbances along the route.
In excavation monitoring, DFOS detects and classifies activities such as digging with heavy equipment or manual tools. It also provides precise location data. This enables faster response times and helps prevent damage before it occurs.
Real-Time Excavation Monitoring for Safer Infrastructure
Unauthorized excavation remains one of the leading causes of pipeline and utility damage. As demand for energy, data centers, and urban infrastructure grows, excavation activity is increasing. Real-time monitoring provides a proactive way to reduce risk and improve compliance with safe digging practices.
AP Sensing Expertise in Power Cable and Pipeline Monitoring
AP Sensing is a global provider of Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) solutions with strong expertise in critical infrastructure protection. The technology is used worldwide to detect third party intrusion along power cables, as well as digging, leaks and other threats along pipelines and utility networks.
By contributing DFOS technology to the Texas811 Guardian program, AP Sensing supports a proactive approach to damage prevention. Utilities benefit from improved visibility along their assets and can respond more effectively to potential threats.
