AP Sensing has been named the recipient of the 2025 Fiber Optic Sensing Association (FOSA) Project of the Year Award for its comprehensive monitoring solution deployed along the BRUA natural gas pipeline. The award was presented during FOSA’s annual member meeting held November 17–19 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The 479-kilometer BRUA pipeline is a key energy corridor connecting Caspian and Black Sea resources with Central Europe. Crossing regions with heavy construction activity, agricultural operations, and areas prone to landslides, the pipeline requires continuous, precise oversight to ensure safe and reliable operation.
To meet these challenges, AP Sensing deployed a Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) solution that combines temperature-based leak detection, pipeline inspection gauge (PIG) tracking, and fiber health monitoring. The system was fully commissioned in September 2024 and delivers automated event classification, accurate localization, and seamless SCADA integration, providing operators with real-time situational awareness over an exceptionally long and diverse asset.
“We are honored that the BRUA pipeline monitoring project has been recognized with the FOSA Project Award. This achievement underscores the vital role of fiber optic sensing in safeguarding energy infrastructure of global importance. Spanning nearly 500 kilometers today, BRUA is more than a technical success; it is a strategic contribution to Europe’s energy independence and security. With the ongoing extension to the Black Sea, the monitoring solution will soon cover roughly 800 kilometers of pipeline, making it one of the most extensive distributed fiber optic sensing deployments worldwide. This award highlights how FOSA can deliver scalable, real-time protection for critical assets while demonstrating the impact of innovative fiber optic solutions for the entire industry.”
FOSA leadership also highlighted the significance of the project for the broader industry.
“Pioneering achievements like AP Sensing’s BRUA pipeline monitoring project demonstrate the value of distributed fiber optic sensing. FOSA congratulates AP Sensing GmbH for its work on this project, which reflects the far-reaching potential and valuable solutions offered by fiber optic sensing technology.”
