FAQs

What is the AP Sensing DAS N56-Series?

The AP Sensing DAS N56-Series is a long-range Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) interrogator for monitoring critical infrastructure.

It is designed for monitoring critical infrastructure applications including pipelines, power grids, railways, subsea infrastructure and perimeter or border assets.

It turns a standard fiber-optic cable into a continuous acoustic sensor, detecting, localizing, and classifying a wide range of events, including construction activity (excavator and manual digging, pile driving, auger drilling, jack hammering), fence tampering (climbing, cutting), person and vehicle movement, leak detection, and cable faults, among others, so operators can act before an incident causes damage, downtime, or safety risk.

What is the sensing range of the DAS N56-Series?

The DAS N56-Series supports simultaneous sensing over two independent channels of up to 100 km each, up to 200 km aggregate sensing coverage from one instrument.

For operators, that means very long pipelines, subsea cables, railway corridors, or border and perimeter zones can be monitored end-to-end without deploying and maintaining multiple separate systems. It supports up to 4 fibers and can be configured for single-channel, simultaneous dual-channel, or up to four sequential channels, so the same instrument scales from a small pilot site to a full network rollout.

What makes the DAS N56-Series different from other DAS systems?

The DAS N56-Series combines three capabilities that are particularly relevant for large-scale infrastructure monitoring:

  1.  Long-range dual-channel sensing: two independent channels of up to 100 km each can be monitored simultaneously from one instrument.

  2. 3P Vector sensing: AP Sensing's 3P Vector technology measures phase information directly and is designed to deliver high sensitivity and low measurement noise over long distances. This provides approximately 30% improved low-frequency sensitivity compared with the preceding AP Sensing DAS generation and increases the available signal margin for detecting weak events.

  3. Compact industrial design: the N56-Series integrates this capability into a 3U, approximately 16 kg instrument designed for deployment in control rooms and remote infrastructure.

How does the DAS N56-Series protect against cyber threats?

Because DAS systems are deployed as part of critical infrastructure, cybersecurity is a procurement requirement, not an afterthought. The DAS N56-Series is built on AP.TrustedCore, AP Sensing's cyber-secure-by-design software platform, with secure boot, signed software updates, an immutable system core, and process isolation, protecting the system itself from tampering or compromise. It is also engineered to support compliance with the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), helping operators meet their own regulatory obligations, and is backed by AP Sensing's ISO/IEC 27001-certified information security management system.

What applications and industries use the DAS N56-Series?

The DAS N56-Series is designed for long-distance infrastructure monitoring applications including underground and subsea power cables, overhead transmission lines, oil, gas and water pipelines, railways, perimeter and border security, and subsea infrastructure. Depending on the application and analytics software used, the system can detect, localize, and classify a wide range of events, including third-party interference, excavation activities, intrusions, people and vehicles, pipeline leaks, power cable faults, trains and other moving objects, as well as other abnormal mechanical events.
